James Welborn of Muhlenberg Couty and His Descendants
By Gail Jackson Miller
p 45 & 46

James Dudley and Malinda's rocky marital relationship was revealed
by their divorce suit in Muhlenberg County Circuit Court. The suit was
first brought by James Dudley WELBORN in September 1841 (313) with the
divorce being uncontested, even though Malinda had numerous relatives in Muhlenberg County at the
time. James Dudley's deposition written 18 August 1841, revealed several detains that were accepted
by the court.

" To the honorable the Judge of the Muhlenberg Circuit Court in chancery setting humbly. Complaining shewest unto your honor James D. Welbourn that some years ago he intermarried with Malinda Newman and had by her 8 children. She having 9 children during the time they lived together your mater states & charges that he at all times treated his said wife Malinda kindley that he was more indulgent than any husband in Kentucky too much so for his own good and happiness, never mistreating her in any way or manner that he loved her better probably than any other man ever loved his companion He was therefore doubless too indulgent as the Suit will show, for several occasion left your mater to live in adultery with a certain Lasley, and has been frequently privately with of similar conduct with other--your mater believed such to be the fact, yet as they had a large family of helpless children he concluded to bear with her conduct and live with her & raise their little ones But your mater expresley States that the last child She had was not his Said child is now an infant. She Said Malinda says that Said infant is not your maters but that a certain Hilary Newton is its father, that for the last 12 or 18 months Said Newton has had frequent communications with her carnally that he is the father of her last child, that said Newton admitted that he is its father and as conclusive evidence thereof, said Malinda on the [blank] day of [blank] 1841 left the bed & went with her furnishing her a horse to ride & has ever since living in open and [unreadable] adultery together, that she is a base and whoreish woman, To the end therfore that Justice may be done in the premises, & his grievances addressed and as he has no remedy save in a Court of Chancery, and he believes the laws of his country will release him from all obligations due from husband to his wife he prays that Said Malinda Welborn be made defendant thereto that She answer the obligations hereof...
James D. Welborn"

No divorce was granted to James Dudley WELBORN in March 1842 Court. (314)
Interestingly, the Hilary NEWTON named in the suit, appeared with his wife in the 1850 Logan
County, Kentucky census. Evidently, James went after Malinda and brought her home, but she was
still unhappy. Proceedings were once again brought into court showing Malinda's adultery with more
than one man with James seeking a divorce. Deposition in the case reported that Malinda left the
county in the company of Mathias CAIN and was living with him in Illinois as his wife. A divorce was
granted to James in the September 1845 court. (316)

2 Most Campbell genealogies list Mary Elizabeth Clifford as a daughter of Tillman Berry Clifford. She may have been raised as his daughter, but he was not her blood father. She was born 11 April 1851, 9 months after Elisah Wriston, Tillman's brother and Deborah Campbell's first husband, died enroute to Utah. Deborah and Tillman were not married until 29 November 1851, when Mary Elizabeth would have been 7-8 months old. Correctly, she should be listed in the family with her full sister and brother. Mary Elizabeth Clifford (Wriston)

The following biographical sketch is adapted from the LDS Biographical Encyclopedia, Andrew Jenson, Vol. 3, p.593 and the Ancestral File.
===============================================
Nathan Bennett Baldwin, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, was born Jan. 27, 1812, at Augusta, Granville county, Upper Canada, the third child of eleven born to Aaron Muson Baldwin and Julia Bisho
Becoming a convert to the restored gospel, he was baptized April 28, 1833, by John Gould, and ordained a Priest Oct. 24, 1833. Soon afterwards he went to Kirtland, Ohio, and in 1834, as a member of Zion's Camp, traveled from Kirtland to Missouri, on which journey he became intimately acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Early in 1835 he was ordained a Seventy by Sidney Rigdon and became a member of the first quorum of Seventy. Later, at Nauvoo, Illinois, he was set apart as a president of the 21st quorum and he afterwards became senior president of that quorum.

On January 5, 1839, Elder Baldwin married Sarah Ann Pine. Later he would practice plural marriage, also taking Margaret Ohler, Oler, or Cler as wives.

After his arrival in Utah, he was advised by Pres. Brigham Young to locate in Fillmore, Millard county, where he resided until his death. When the 21st quorum of Seventy was located in Millard county, Brother Baldwin was continued as senior president of the same, which position he held until the time of his death, which ensued from general debility Nov. 1, 1891, at Fillmore.

Brother Baldwin was a faithful, humble man, possessing the love and respect of all who knew him, and died in full faith of the gospel. Only a few days after his death, his aged wife, Sarah, the partner of his youth, followed him to the other side.

Ruin Followed Riches for a Utah Genius
Will Bagley
Published: 07/08/2001 Edition: Final Section: Utah Page: B1

In the 1920s, the sleepy Salt Lake County farming community of East Mill Creek was home to Utah's first high-tech boom. The Baldwin Radio Company employed 150 men and women around the clock, producing a remarkable variety of gadgets, including "Baldy Phones," the first radio headsets. Few remember that Nathaniel Baldwin, an eccentric Utahn, invented headphones in 1910. During the Roaring '20s, his company generated $2 million in yearly sales, worth 10 times that amount today.

Baldwin was born to a pioneer family in Fillmore in 1878. As a child, he was "always building things," including his own bicycle and steam engine. To get an education, he walked the 120 miles to Provo (which the young inventor found as exotic as the "golden city of Baghdad") and began working his way through Brigham Young Academy. He later studied physics and electrical engineering at Stanford.

Baldwin's devotion to certain quaint LDS doctrines cost him his professorship at the Y. in 1905. He supported his family running remote hydroelectric plants on Snake Creek near Heber City and in East Mill Creek Canyon. After finding that he couldn't hear the LDS General Conference speakers at the Tabernacle, Baldwin devised a way to amplify sound. Bewildered visitors to East Mill Creek Canyon soon reported hearing unearthly voices echoing off the canyon walls, the product of Baldwin's compressed-air sound amplifier.

Baldwin could not interest any private company in producing the world's first headphones, but when the U.S. Navy ordered 100 headsets on the eve of World War I, he was on the road to riches. To power the plant he built on 2300 East, Baldwin dammed East Mill Creek and built a generator out of bicycle wheels and piano wire. Hydropower soon lighted up not only his factory but the entire neighborhood, and he paid his workers the princely sum of four dollars a day.

Baldwin also designed radio speakers, including the deluxe Master-Baldwin Throatype Clarophone, said to be shaped like opera star Enrico Caruso's throat. According to legend, Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of the cathode ray tube, built the world's first television in Baldwin's factory.

Like many geniuses, Baldwin was neither a fiscal wizard nor a good judge of character. He turned down an offer of more than $1 million for his company to protect his employees' jobs. His remarkable generosity made him an easy mark. To complicate matters, Baldwin was devoted to the doctrine of polygamy and believed in the coming of "one Mighty and Strong" who would "bring forth the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon." He financed construction of twelve bungalows known as "polygamy alley" that still line Evergreen Avenue and invested $50,000 in a worthless "dream mine" in Farmington Canyon.

More than 200,000 orders for Baldwin headsets poured in, in 1922. But as many subsequent high-tech firms have learned, success can lead to financial disaster. Competition led to a cash-flow crisis and Baldwin's polygamous comrades beguiled him into a series of predatory deals. By 1924, he was bankrupt. Baldwin won back control of his company, but his shady colleagues persuaded him to sell stock in the Omega Investment Company. He was convicted of mail fraud in 1930 and served two years at McNeil Island Federal Prison. He returned to Utah a broken man.

An impoverished Nathaniel Baldwin continued his inventive ways until his death at his son's home on January 19, 1961, but he never recaptured his lost glory. His factory still stands, hidden next to the woods behind the East Mill Creek Library, a forgotten monument to a troubled genius.

12 The Nathaniel Baldwin Diaries (Accn 1298)
University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division
The Nathaniel Baldwin Diaries (1897-1961) are photocopies of a microfilm copy of original journals written by Baldwin, a Salt Lake City religious leader and inventor. The son of converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Baldwin was born in Fillmore, Utah, in 1878. He attended Brigham Young Academy and Utah State Agricultural College. He completed his education in physics and electrical engineering at Stanford University. Soon after, while teaching physics and theology at Brigham Young University (BYU), Baldwin became involved in the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. A primary tenet of the Fundamentalist movement was support of polygamy and Baldwin was fired from BYU due to his stand on this issue. To produce a widely-used amplification device that utilized compressed air, Baldwin built a factory on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley. The business became successful and Baldwin reputedly used the profits to support other Fundamentalists. In 1930, fraudulent business practices led to an imprisonment that lasted until 1932. The remainder of his life was impoverished and he died in 1961 in Salt Lake City. In addition to recording Baldwin's personal experiences, the journals also contain financial records stemming from Baldwin's involvement with various LDS congregations, particularly the East Millcreek Ward of the LDS church. An inventory is available.

Civil War records indicate Joel Campbell died on the ship "J.H.Dickey" of disease. the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry was at this time taking part in the opening of the seige of Vickburg and had just fought in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou which is in the state of Mississippi on the Yazoo River not far from the Mississippi River. It is likely then that he died on the ship while on the Yazoo or Mississippi River.

35 Sketches from the life of Phoebe Ann Campbell
daughter of John Campbell

as related to Myrtle C.Swainston and Lorine Goodwin on 31 December 1955
by Jemimma HelenGodfrey Campbell, who is Phoebe Ann`s daughter-in-law, and who knew her well and admired her. It is supplemented by dates and places obtained
from family pedigree and family group sheets.

Phoebe Ann Campbell was born 17 June 1820 in Ridgeberry, BradfordCounty,
Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Campbell and Mercy Worden. She camefrom a large family. The Campbells worked in timber in Pennsylvania. She was married to her first cousin Isaac Campbell while still in Pennsylvania. She came across the plains, and she and Isaac were among the first settlers of North Ogden. (They were not the very first.) They lived together for nineteen years, but didn`t have any children. They separated and he married again. He gave Phoebe the house in North Ogden, which was the same house in which Myrtle Lorine Campbell was born. Phoebe then married her uncle Jonathan Campbell and was sealed to him. He was a polygamist and we have never known for sure how many wives he had, four, we think, but he did not live with all at the same time.
Phoebe was a doctor and midwife and took care of almost every birth in North Ogden and Pleasant View. She was away from home most of the time attending to these duties. She stayed with a woman ten days unless she was called away to deliver a baby elsewhere. Her fee was three dollars and she was often paid in food or dry-goods or whatever the family had. One time two babies were being born at almost the same time, one in Pleasant View and another in North Ogden. She traveled back and forth between the two places to deliver the babies and then to dress them. She taught Sunday School, the 10 or 12 year old boys for years and years. She was a big woman, about the size as her son Lorin.(He was a tall, heavy-set man). Her hair was dark brown, her eyes blue, and her complexion medium. When her husband, Jonathan died, he deaded some property to Phoebe and Lorin, her only son who lived, and they owned this land together. She and Lorin`s family lived in the house in different rooms until she died, at which time the property went to Lorin. Phoebe did not do much mid-wifing when her children were babies. John Alvin was kicked on the head by a horse when he was four years old and did not die until three months afterward, during which time the bones worked out of his head.
Phoebe died 30 October 1895 when she was 75 years old. Shortly before her death she washed outside, as was her custom, after being in a steam-filled house. that evening she went to a political rally and came back ill with a cold which turned to pneumonia and caused her death. She was buried in the North Ogden Cemetary.
